Biodiversity Net Gain - 2026 Changes

The Government is introducing changes to BNG requirements are intended to reduce administrative burdens on smaller developments and simplify the assessment process for minor schemes

From the 6th August 2026 the following changes are coming into effect:

• The introduction of the new 0.2 hectare area-based exemption
• The removal of the self and custom build exemption
• The exemption of temporary planning permissions granted for a maximum of five years
• Amendments to the biodiversity gain hierarchy for minor developments only

Further amendments later in the year are expected to include:

• Exemptions for developments whose primary objective is to conserve or enhance biodiversity
• Exemption for targeted development that enhances parks, playing fields and public gardens
• Changes to the de minimis threshold/targeted exemption for brownfield sites

Only schemes submitted after the 6th of August will benefit from the changes.
